Oil painting is a breeze when you use an alkyd medium. It dries so much sooner and I can keep painting the next day on a dry surface. I enjoy blending colors while the paint stays wet. And the new mediums do not have an odor. This study had other paintings below it. I could continue to rework and still have the finality I wanted from an oil painting.
Pastels are a wonderful drawing and painting medium. I love the drawing aspect so I can leave my drawing strokes, And I like the countless ways to use the medium such as:
- Underpainting–use pastel first and then make it a paint with either water or alcohol
- Paper vs. sanded grounds–use different surfaces to create more or less texture
- Blending–Blend pastels with other colors or use a color alone. Use a dull color and add whiter or vibrant colors on top
